The Local Area

Campus in Autumn

Michigan Tech is located in Houghton on Upper Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. The towns of Houghton and Hancock have a combined population of approximately 12,000. Restaurants, coffee shops, retail stores, and movie theatres fill the downtowns, while chain restaurants, malls, and shopping centers are a short car or bus ride outside of Houghton. The area is serviced by Northwest Airlines and Indian Trails Buses.

Fall in the Keweenaw is special, with abundant local color for touring and many special Michigan Tech activities such as K-Day (Keweenaw Day, a day on Lake Superior’s shores), Parade of Nations (representatives from eighty nations celebrate with a parade and food fair), and Homecoming (hobo parade, queen, and football game).

Winter brings lots of snow, but it doesn’t get in our way. Michigan Tech has a Midyear Commencement each December, and in February the Winter Carnival is a celebration of our snow, with huge statues, a queen, skits, basketball and hockey games, and many special events (including broomball, which must be seen to be believed).

Spring means gearing up for the final push toward final exams on campus and another tradition, Spring Fling, allows for a day of music, food, and fun on the campus mall before cramming. The Keweenaw is especially gorgeous when the temperatures start to rise and the snow melts away. Spring Commencement is held in late April.

Summer in the Keweenaw is tourist season, with motels, restaurants, and shops catering to visitors and summer students alike. Isle Royale National Park, in the middle of Lake Superior and home to some Michigan Tech research projects, attracts those who seek solitude. The small village of Copper Harbor, on the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, is another favorite destination of tourists.
