Entrepreneurs are welcome and encouraged at Michigan Tech:

An Entrepreneurial Expo was held at Michigan Tech on Tuesday, December 7th. A resource fair in the Red Metal Room of the Memorial Union Building featured exhibits displaying resources available from MTU and from Finlandia University, as well as the MTEC SmartZone, Keweenaw Industrial Council, Northern Initiatives, Michigan Works, Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce, First Step, and the Upper Peninsula Economic Development Alliance.

An evening session in the Electrical Energy Resources Center began with a keynote talk by Alan West, CEO of the MTEC SmartZone, followed by a panel discussion by local entrepreneurs: Glen Simula from GS Engineering, Keith Johnson from ThermoAnalytics, Barbara Bosco from B. Bosco Designs, Jon Davis who founded the first Library Bar and Restaurant, Steve Fitzgerald from Fitzgerald & Associates, and Kelly Hrabinsky from BodyMechanix. The entrepreneurs answered questions from the audience related to starting businesses in the Copper Country.

CenTILE, MTU’s Center for Technological Innovation, Leadership and Entrepreneurship, founded in 2001, is currently headed up by Dr. Paul A. Nelson and Dr. Dana Johnson of the School of Business and Economics. The Center sponsors public lectures, seminars, workshops, and student projects to stimulate business development and expansion.

The School of Business and Economics offers courses in Entrepreneurship and the Management of Technology, as well as a concentration in Entrepreneurship in the Master of Science in Business Administration degree program.

The College of Engineering has pioneered the PRISM program and the Enterprise Program in which students operate small companies as part of the curriculum.
