  Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Geological Engineering Students Win SME and Mine Fund Scholarships
Eric Hikade, Chemical Engineering, receives a SME scholarship award from Dr. Mike Mullins, chair of Chemical Engineering Department. Charlotte Nurnberger, Chemical Engineering graduate student, receives a SME scholarship award from Dr. Mullins, chair of Chemical Engineering Department.
Michigan Tech's Mine Fund Scholarship Awards for $750 for Bill Kloth, Mining Engineering, center, and Kirstin Burns of Geological Engineering are awarded by Dr. Richard Gertsch, Mining Engineering professor (Michelle Glowacki at left, accepting for Kirstin Burns). Peter Haarala, Mining Engineering, received the SME Mineral Processing Division Award of $1,000 from Dr. Gertsch, Mining Engineering professor.
Guest Speaker Mark N.Savit of Patton Boggs LLP, Attorneys at Law, Washington, D.C. and Denver, Co presented the "Ten Reasons You Know You're in Deep Kinchee" or, when you really need an attorney. Dr. Allan Johnson, Mining Engineering Professor Emeritus, announces the winners of the silent auction of mining memorabilia and artifacts. The proceeds are invested in the Mine Fund account that has reached $47,000, providing annual scholarships. Over $22,000 has been generated over the years from the Mine Fund for student scholarships.
Jayson Ripke, PhD, Chemical Engineering and MS, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering now with North Shore Mining Inc. in Minnesota, with Dr. Komar Kawatra, Chemical Engineering, Mineral Processing Program, and Peter Suardini, '81 graduate in Metallurgy with Cleveland Cliffs Inc., Michigan Todd Davis, '92 BS and '93 MS, Metallurgical Engineering, now a pyrometallurgist at the Empire Mine, Cleveland Cliffs inc., Michigan with Dr. Komar Kawatra
The banquet and awards ceremony were held in the evening at the Ramada Inn in Hancock. Earlier, during the day-long technical session, several papers were presented on various mining, mineral processing, chemical engineering, exploration and economic subjects.
