Former Tech President Ray Smith Former Tech President Ray Smith Addresses Graduates
Ray Smith, who led Michigan Tech as its president from 1965 to 1979, addressed the graduates and received the University’s highest honor, the Melvin Calvin Medal of Distinction

Johnson, Exploration & Production Vice President Operations Technology, Operating Management System, Continuous Improvement and Activity Planning at BP America Inc.

Philemon Lewis, Philemon Lewis, a 1949 graduate of Michigan Tech with a BS in mechanical engineering, spoke to the REAC members on April 7, 2010. He told about his 50 year career in railroad engineering, including continuous rail welding for several major railroads.

Hajj E. Flemings Hajj E. Flemings, presented "Personal Brand Management" March 25 at Fisher 138; Hajj is a dynamic, energetic speaker that connects with his audience to inspire and challenge them to reach their hidden potential. Hajj a former collegiate basketball player accomplished his lifelong dream of designing footwear with his design of the equator cross-trainer sneaker for Mavada Footwear. He is a Michigan Tech Mechanical Engineering grad.

Portage Lake  Bridge The Heavy Bridge
Three Michigan Tech alumni were on the engineering team that helped build the Portage Lake (don't say "lift") Bridge, which marked its fiftieth anniversary in June. John Michels '51 of Ontonagon was a project engineer and remembers it as "quite a stressful engineering feat, especially erecting the steel."
Scott Turner Mining History Comes to Life at Commencement In 1932, a distinguished Michigan mining engineer named Scott Turner received an honorary doctorate in engineering from Michigan Tech, at that time called the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. At Michigan Tech's midyear Commencement on Dec. 12--77 years later--one of the first recipients of the University's PhD in industrial heritage and archeology will wear Turner's historic academic hood to accept his degree.

A poor farm boy, Frank Pavlis was typical of his generation to be the first in his family to attend college. He came to Michigan Tech on a four-year scholarship, hungering for an engineering education. So, inadequate food notwithstanding, and the need to work part-time to offset expenses, he persevered and in 1938 graduated at the top of his class

Sarah A. Rajala Sarah A. Rajala, EE '74, has been named dean of Mississippi State University's Bagley College of Engineering. She has been chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mississippi State since 2006. Prior to that, Rajala was associate dean for research and graduate programs at North Carolina State University, where she taught and worked in administration for more than two decades. She will serve as the 2008-09 president of the American Society for Engineering Education
